Income Inequality

There has never been a bigger gap between the very poor and the very rich than any time since the 1920s.  The middle class is disappearing.  As a result, it is common to see people making difficult choices– a young family struggling to provide child care so both parents can work; senior citizens finding it difficult to heat their homes, put food on the table or pay the electric bill.  We cannot allow this kind of poverty in our communities.  We must work together to see that every child is fed, clothed and able to get a first rate education; that everyone has reliable access to affordable healthcare and housing.

Matt will fight for a $15 minimum wage and good jobs that pay a living wage that supports families.  Matt also supports the millionaire tax of 4% on income over $1 million.  The proceeds will be dedicated to education, roads, bridges and mass transportation.  All of these investments in our infrastructure will create good paying union jobs.  Matt believes we have to take a realistic look at our tax system to ensure that it is equitable and everyone is paying their fair share.

Every child should have access to quality, affordable education.  The best way to move forward toward a strong middle class is to ensure that we maintain our current ranking as the best educated workforce in the Nation.  We need to make our college system affordable, keep interest rates on college loans low and help graduates with a heavy debt burden refinance their loans at lower interest rates.

We are lucky enough to live in a place as beautiful as Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the second wealthiest state in what is the richest country in the history of the world.  Not everyone is getting by without a struggle here.  We should work together to provide a hand up, not a hand out, to help lift people out of the cycle of poverty.  Providing opportunities to working class people benefits everyone in our community.
